Long Lost Relative
November 19, 2010
Do you have relatives that you haven`t seen in years, or decades - have really lost touch with? Be careful! Starting in October, Weslaco residents (and others in the Valley) started receiving calls from a long lost "nephew" who wanted to reconnect with his relatives.
He seemed to know the person he called and wanted to come by and see him or her. Usually, the victim received a subsequent call, stating that there had been a bad accident and the relative was in jail and needed money right away.
Unfortunately, two Weslaco residents fell for the scam and wired money via Western Union to this predator. Many other residents have gotten the calls but knew better than to cooperate. But the two older victims lost $1,840 and $2,500, respectively.
This male suspect appears to be in Mexico, speaks only Spanish, and takes advantage of the aged and gullible victims. These calls continue today.
If you know who might be perpetrating this scam on our elderly, call Weslaco Crime Stoppers with your information.
