Scam Involving Fictitious Federal Reserve Grant
January 2012
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is aware of an ongoing scam that involves fraudsters claiming to be from the Federal Reserve (sometimes using the name James Carter) contacting the public through unsolicited phone calls or emails regarding a fictitious $7000 federal grant. In most instances regarding this scam, the fraudsters require the victims to wire a certain sum of money (via Western Union or Moneygram) in order to receive the fictitious grant. The victim is told this money is needed for an application fee, a charitable donation or a processing fee in order for the fictitious grant money to be released. After the victim wires these funds, the victim is contacted again and requested to wire additional money for one final fee in order to receive the fictitious grant money. Of course, the victims will never receive any grant money as this program does not exist.
Please note the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is NOT involved in any federal grant program. We urge the public to remain alert to fraudulent scams involving individuals who purport to be employees of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York does not maintain grant money or any other type of funds / accounts for individuals.
Please remember: the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will never contact the public via unsolicited phone calls or e-mails asking for money or any other type of personal information.
Someone set a fire inside a building belonging to the Seventh Adventist Church on Sunday night, January 19, about 9:30pm. A small metal vacant structure was the target. It is located behind the Adventist laundry building, on East 10th Street and Bridge Avenue.
The suspect was able to crawl through an upper window, go inside, and start a fire. No one was injured, and not much was inside to be destroyed. It did take the fire department several hours to completely extinguish the flames. Now the arson investigators want to find out who started the fire.
If you know anything about this fire, call Weslaco Crime Stoppers at (956) 968-8477, or leave a tip on this website. If your tip leads to the arrest or juvenile detention of the guilty party, you will be eligible for a cash reward. You may remain anonymous.
Burned Building
Weslaco Police need your assistance in solving two burglaries that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 8. In the first burglary, at Just-a-Cut, 1504 W. Expressway 83, near Denny`s, one or more intruders destroyed the lock on the front door of the business and entered.
Once inside, the burglar quickly grabbed the entire cash register and took it with him. Unfortunately for him, there was no money in it.
Dissatisfied, the voracious burglar traveled to the HEB area, 1004 N. Texas Blvd, selecting as victim "iSpa & Nails" which is south of the HEB store. Same tune; second verse. He ripped out the lock to the door, entered, ransacked the interior until he hit pay dirt. The burglar left with a sizable amount of cash. Both the stores had alarm systems that activated. Police officers responded in good time, but the burglar had already made his getaway. Both burglaries occurred between 2:15am and 2:50am.
If you have any idea who committed these burglaries or know anything else about these crimes, call Weslaco Crime Stoppers at (956) 968-8477, or leave your tip on the website. An arrest makes you eligible for a cash reward. You remain anonymous.
A local business, "Rising Star Academy," located at 318 S. Texas Blvd., was broken into on Friday, January 17. It is believed that the burglary occurred between 7:30 and 10:15 in the morning. Taken were 5 guitars that were on display in the front window. There is no description of the guitars. If anyone happened to sell you a guitar for a cheap price, call Weslaco Crime Stoppers. The number is (956) 968-8477.
On November 7, at about 3:20am, two burglars kicked in the
front door of a residence on Southland Drive. They
went into the living room, grabbing a 52-inch Samsung TV
and a briefcase. They were only inside the house a minute.
The homeowner`s surveillance system captured some good
images of the two men. If you know these burglars or have any other
information about this burglary, call Weslaco Crime Stoppers
